TRANSCRIBED FROM THE COURIER-INDEX NOVEMBER 30, 1917 P. 1
France, October 18, 10 p.m.
I have made a very surprising and painful observation today. Both my hands are badly frostbitten. Monday morning I walked down on the wards where there was a heavy fog and I got very cold making histories of examinations last night, and today my hands are badly swollen, painful and blistered. I cannot get my ring off and they are very uncomfortable. Have done my work today and am really not worried about them. I have a great many men with trench feet and hands, and I know how they must feel. for some of them are very bad.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Hugh McCulloch to his wife. McCulloch Dr. McCulloch was serving with a St. Louis hospital unit at a British hospital base in France. He was a former resident of Marianna, Arkansas. At the time he held the rank of Captain.
