TRANSCRIBED FROM THE DAILY ARKANSAS GAZETTE FEBRUARY 15, 1919 P. 8
The 26th of September was our unlucky day. About 63 came back out of a company of 250, in a battle on that day, and I happened to be one of the lucky ones, but I don’t see how I was.
There were four of us kneeling down behind a bush, firing, and a G. I. Con, came over and killed the man in front of me, my pal, and also the one behind me. The other man and I went up and over, but I cannot tell what became of him. He either was killed or lost as far as I could ever find out. As I know his father in Dallas, I intend to try and locate him if possible.
I am, as you see, in Germany. Was sitting on old Kaiser Bill’s bed this morning, up in the castle on the Rhine.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Harold Charles Millard from Coblenz, Germany, to his parents Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Millard of Little Rock, Arkansas. He was serving in Company D. 3rd Army. He was born on February 16, 1889 in Chillicothe, Ohio. The family was living in Little Rock by 1900. He died on October 5, 1927 in Dallas, Texas. He is buried in the Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas. His military headstone identifies him as Texas, PVT 1 CL 359 INF 90 DIV. He was described as being tall and slender with blue eyes and brown hair.
