TRANSCRIBED FROM THE PINE BLUFF DAILY GRAPHIC JANUARY 18, 1919 P. 4
Dear Friend:
Received your more than welcome letter some few weeks ago, but we just got in some paper, and the first thing to do is to answer your letter. I am now in the base hospital with a gun shot wound in my right thigh. It shattered the bone, and an operation was performed. The bullet was removed and I am getting along fine now. My wound is very nearly healed up, and the doctor says that I will be out in another week. That sure listens good. Four weeks in bed is quite tiresome, but still its nice to be out of the weather, nice beds, three meals a day, and still drawing pay. I’m a gold brick!
It is raining again. When I finish this letter I am going to shave and take a bath and change clothes. Say, this is great! I know Oscar would like to have made the trip I have. I have been all over this said France, and have seen some sights and some towns. The only town I haven’t seen is Paris, and I may see that before I return.
There are 20 German prisoners who are wounded, here in the same ward with me. I was a German prisoner for 5 days when I was wounded, the Germans ran off, and the Americans found me. Believe me I was glad to see them.
With love to all,
I am your friend,
“WILLIE.”
NOTES: Miller is writing from France where he was recovering from wounds in a hospital.
