TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ASHLEY COUNTY EAGLE AUGUST 15, 1918 P. 1
Lee Hall, Va., Aug. 3, 1918
Dear Eagle and Friends:
I am a citizen of Hamburg and have been in the army about four months. I was sent from Ashley County Local Board to the Aviation Camp at Waco, Texas, and was in Waco until the last of July; then I was sent to my present location, which is at Lee Hall, Va. Our camp is located on the banks of the James River, and is a beautiful camp. We are eighteen miles from New Port News and twenty miles from Norfolk. I sure did enjoy my trip from Waco to Virginia. I passed through the States of Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and nearly thru Virginia. I also crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains and there I saw some beautiful scenery. I went along Pigeon River for over forty miles, and on one side of the track there was a cliff hundreds of feet high and on the other side was Pigeon River, a most beautiful stream. It might be of interest to the readers of the Eagle to know something about the other boys from Ashley County. There were quite a number when we first arrived at Waco, but at present there are only two of us together, Herman E. Nutt and myself. We are in the same Company and are enjoying the best of health.
Your friend,
Rufus Murphy
