TRANSCRIBED FROM THE DEWITT ENTERPRISE AUGUST 2, 1917 P. 2
On active service with the American Expeditionary Force.
France, July 3, 1917.
My Dear Brother:
We arrived here safely a few days ago, and are quartered here for the present. Tomorrow we take part in a CENSORED_____ ____ the Fourth of July, and CENSORED _______ _______ ________ your little old brother was in it.
I like France fine, as much as I have seen of it, and could write you a lot of things that I have seen that would be of interest, but am not allowed to do so, because of military reasons. We can not even write the name of the place at which we are stationed.
It sure was some trip over here, and I sure was glad when we arrived. I was not seasick, as we had fine weather all the way over.
The people here are very courteous and considerate, and sure were glad to see us. We were taken out for a sight-seeing this afternoon in automobiles, and sure did see some sights. We see lots of wounded soldiers. I do not know when we will see any active service but it will be quite a while, I think, as we have not had much training yet.CENSORED _______
Your loving brother,
Joe L. Oliver
NOTES: Oliver is from DeWitt and is writing to his brother Elbert A. Oliver. The CENSORED areas were blotted out by ink on the original letter.
