TRANSCRIBED FROM THE HELENA WORLD FEBRUARY 8, 1918 P. 1
War Zone. Dec. 26, 1917.
My Dear Brother:
With the present letter I give you news of my good health. On the tenth of this month I wrote a letter with a new address, but now I have been transferred to another company, after 28 months of srvice with one company. I have compared the two companies, and I think that I am better off now. My new address is: Al Soldato Onorato Gaspare, Batteria 280, P. D’Assedia, Campo di riordinament, Attiglieria 10, Fortezza Zona di Guerra.
I am still safe, but you must understand that we get new orders often.
Where I am now we have nothing to do, but we are expecting orders to leave for the front at any time. We are here in a cantonment. I cannot tell you of the terrible past and the suffering we have been through which I supposed you have heard, that the dirty traitors have betrayed our beautiful Italy. We were always victorious, and with the aid of God and the fortune of war, we hope that we will soon have victory and peace.
Many regards to all my friends in Helena, from your brother.
GASPARO ONORATO.
NOTES: Onorato was a former resident of Helena, Arkansas. Just before the war began he had returned to Sicily to get married. When the war began he joined the Italian military. He was writing to his brother A. Onorato.
