TRANSCRIBED FROM THE GREEN FOREST TRIBUNE JULY 12, 1918 P. 2
Ft. Leavenworth, Kans.
July 2, 1918.
Dear Grandpa:
Received your letter a few days ago and sure was glad to get it. It has been quite a time since I heard from any one there. Have been depending on The Tribune and the letters that mamma received from there for the news.
Hope you are all feeling as well as I am. Have gained ten pounds in the last two weeks and am still getting bigger.
Everything I have seen of army life so far I like just fine and think I am getting along fine too. I have already passed all examinations in semaphore and wigwag signaling and am in the highest class in continental telegraphy. Have already qualified in that; haven’t had many lessons in wireless so far but have the Heliography signaling down pretty good and am taking lessons in electrical engineering every day and also drill and go through the physical exercises every day so you can imagine about how busy they keep us for eight hours a day. We have already drawn all our over seas equipment and keep everything packed ready to move on thirty minutes notice. We expect to be in France within three weeks but don’t know anything. Well, I am about to run out of ink so will have to hurry through. Am writing on the arm of my chair at the Y. M. C. A. so am not doing a very good job of it. Tell everyone hello and write. Will be glad to hear from you anytime.
