TRANSCRIBED FROM THE NEWPORT DAILY INDEPENDENT SEPTEMBER 18, 1917 P. 2
Camp Pike, Sept. 14, 1917.
Today has been a big day in Ft. Roots for Company E. A big parade and review before the governor and Col. Stroupe. Of course Company E led the parade and believe me we were there. Wish you could have seen that line when the com-command was given eyes right, or when we passed the review stand straight as a poker and in perfect step. We sure feel good over it tonight I was right guide and got back around in time to see the second regiment pass in review. That second regiment hasn’t anything on us.
Capt. Hurt is senior captain of the regiment.
Pewee Stallings and Walker are in the band, and they don’t make them any better than Walker.
You want to come down and see us before we leave. Probably we will parade in Little Rock in a few days, and that would be a good time to see us.
How is everything in Newport? Write and give everybody my regards.
NOTES: This letter was written by Elmer Patton of Newport, Arkansas.
