Dear Uncle:
I will try and write you a few lines and let you know where I am. I have been in the hospital for about three weeks. I got wounded in one of the big drives, was shot through the foot and lost one of my toes on my right foot, and also shot through the leg above the knee. But I am getting along fine and will be all right in a few days. They have some of the finest doctors in the world here in the army, and they take the best of care of all wounded soldiers. There sure are a lot of Red Cross nurses here, too, so we have the best of care while in the hospital.
When I got wounded I lost my pack and in it I had some valuable papers, my bank book and my check book. These had my name and your address in them, and also the Farmers & Merchants Bank. If they are found they will be sent to you or the bank. I want you to watch out for them, and tell Claire Farmr to watch out for them. Some one may forge some checks on me, but I hardly think they would pass.
Don’t answer this letter until you hear from me again, as I may be transferred from this hospital.
Your nephew,
Pvt. Dale Petross,
Co. C: 356 Inf.
NOTES: Dale Winton Petross was born on October 10, 1895 and died on May 31. 1980. He enlisted on April 12, 1918 and was discharged on June 21, 1919. A letter written by his brother R. Petross is also posted on this site.
