TRANSCRIBED FROM THE NEWPORT DAILY INDEPENDENT FEBRUARY 11, 1918 P. 3
Dear Friend, Mr. Rushton,
I received your letter this p.m. and you don’t know how much I enjoyed it. I had just come in from the Rifle Range and was looking for a letter or so and when I opened yours I knew that I had friends in Newport.
Well, Mr. Rushton, since they busted the old company up I never get to see any of the boys. Sure hated to leave the boys and officers, but I am satisfied where I am. We have fine officers, and one thing is certain Co. B. is the best company in the regiment. I may be covering a good deal of territory, but I think so, and so do the rest of the boys.
Mr. Rushton, I thank you very much for the Smileage Book. I guess you know that we were under quarantine and have been for three months. Sure will be glad when we can go from company to company and also to town.
Call to quarters has been sounded and I am just a little sleepy, as we have to be up at 5 a.m., so will close hoping to hear from you again, With my best regards I remain your friend,
Owen Pettet.
NOTES: Henry Owen Pettet was born in Newport, Arkansas on April 7, 1897 and died on October 12, 1943. He departed St. Nazaire, France on May 29, 1919 onboard the Housatonic. He was listed as a Sgt. serving in Hdq. Co. 1st R.D. St Aignan Casual Co. No 4964 Special Discharge.
