I am on leave now and can concentrate my thought on a letter to you. I have been on the battlefield, and am back recuperating, Mother, I can say I was very fortunate and a lucky boy. I was wounded slightly in the hip by a German schrapnel shell, but not seriously – have also had some very narrow escapes, but God certainly was with me. It would be difficult to tell you the details of this warfare, so will have to wait until I come home. The kaiser’s days are numbered.
NOTES: Partial letter written by Wayne Phillips to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Phillips. The letter was dated October 7. Phillips was a soldier in the 363rd Infantry.
