TRANSCRIBED FROM THE SHARP COUNTY RECORD AUGUST 30, 1918 P. 3
Editor Record:
If you will allow me a small space in the dear old home paper I will write a few lines to the homefolks and friends. The reason I want to write through the Record is that I am expecting to be here only a few days, and where I am going the readers of the Record may guess. I haven’t time to write even to my own folks personally, and they do not know where I am, so these few lines that my relatives and friends may know where I have gotten to and where I am going.
I am eighteen miles from New York City on the coast, and in a replacement camp. Of course I realize what is before me, and I know that I shall soon be in a very unhealthy country. But I am ready and willing to do my bit in this great struggle for world liberty, and more than that, I feel that it is a duty that I owe my country. Before leaving for camp I said I wanted to go to the front if I went anywhere, and that is where I am going.
I have been in camp only a short while, but I have worked hard every day. I intend to keep a stiff upper lip, whatever happens. Whatever I am called upon to do I am going to do to the my best ability, like a man. I am certain that everything will be made right in the end, but the Kaiser must have a thrashing before the end comes.
I wish Sharp county folks, one and all, many years of peace and happiness.
Millard F. Powell.
Camp Merritt, New Jer.
NOTES: Millard F. Powell was born on August 4, 1895 and died on January 26, 1925. He is buried in Powells Chapel Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, Arkansas.
