Camp Pike, June 2, 1918.
Dear Doctor:
I wish to make my final reports to you on this side. I suppose that I have made good. I’ve been made commanding officer of a field hospital, and will leave here the (--) for port of embarkation. When landed on the other side will report to you as often as I can. Remember me kindly to Dr. Hale, V. C. Pettie and Ellis McKee.

NOTES: First Lt. Hugh L. Rains was born on January 10, 1880 in Arkansas and died on May 21, 1949. He is buried in the Okmulgee Cemetery in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. His military headstone identifies him as an Arkansas, 1st Lt. serving in the 533 Engineers in World War I. He sailed for France in the Medical Detachment of the 533rd Engineers (2ndphase) onboard the Mount Vernon on August 23, 1918. The 533rd was later designated the 27th Engineers Service Company Forestry. He returned with the 27th onboard the Powhaton leaving France on July 18, 1919. The letter was written to Dr. W. W. Jackson.
