TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ASHLEY COUNTY EAGLE AUGUST 22, 1918 P. 1
With pleasure I will answer your letters. I have just received five at one time. They were dated from June 12th to 28th. Yes, mother we have plenty of fruits and vegetables to eat, such as lettuce, onions, cucumbers, radishes, beans, peas and squash. No, I’ve never seen any of the French children eating grass, but I have seen them eating slops out of the garbage barrels. It made me so sorry for them I had to slip them a little something to eat. The Red Cross is a good thing. I read in the Eagle the letter from the little French orphan to Mr. Titus. The child lives in Berdeaux—I’ve been there a number of times. We had another air raid last night, but no damage done that I know of. I had another letter from Joe a few days ago. He seems to be well and having a good time. From your loving son.
