My I have a space in your good paper to write to my many friends in Pope county? This is a great place; so much natural scenery, and on the old chicamauga battle ground. There are 1200 doctors in training here. There were about 1600 but they have gone to different places some to France. I guess I will be going, too, soon. There are about 75,000 fighting men in all here in training. They have sham battles every day, in and out of the trenches. It sure seems like war to hear the big cannons roaring. The only thing liking to be real war is the absent of the enemy (German).
When I read the C-D it is just like a letter from home and it takes away all the blues. I am getting along fine. The longer i stay the more I want to go to France, but I would like to see all my dear friends in old Pope county. There is one other Pope county boy here besides myself, Dr. Tree Burgess.
Yours truly.
A.W. RYE. 1st Lieot. M.R.C.
NOTES: Dr. Albert Webster rye was born in Arkansas on July 11, 1874 and died on December 28, 1945 in Arkansas. He is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Russellville, Arkansas. His military headstone identifies him as a Arkansas Lieutenant serving in the Medical Corps in WWI. Also served with the 114th Infantry, 39th Division.
