TRANSCRIBED FROM THE BENTON COURIER OCTOBER 31, 1918 P. 2
Massay, France
Sept. 14th, 1918
Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Shepherd
Bryant, Ark.
Dear Parents:
After so long a delay I will try to write you a few lines to let you know I am well and am enjoying life fine although I miss the English language very much. I can only talk to my comrades but I am satisfied with that.
How is everything around Bryant. Fine I hope. I miss my mail so bad because I have not had a letter since I have been here.
I have enjoyed myself while I was at Brest. It is a real nice place. I am at Massay at present. And getting along very well. I have been promoted to the grade of sergeant since I have been over here. Don’t know how I will get along, but I have not had any trouble yet.
We have been having some rainy weather the last few days but it has cleared up now. Seasons are much later here than in the U.S. for berries are just getting ripe now. Tell John to write and I get pretty lonesome at times, and a few lines from home would be a lot of company to me. Tell Will to send me some chewing tobacco for it is getting scarce over here.
Well, as news is scarce at present, I will close for this time. Hoping to hear from you real soon. I am as ever
Your son,
Laban
PS. My address is Sergt. Laban Shepherd, Co. H. 153rd Infantry, A.P.O. 804, American Expeditionary Forces. Tell Roy Elrod’s people that Roy is getting along fine.
NOTES: Laban Brazilton Shepherd was born on October 13, 1898 in Marvell, Arkansas and died on December 11, 1988 in Lance County, Oregon. He is buried in the Springfield Memorial Gardens in Springfield, Oregon. He departed for France from Newport News, VA. On August 6, 1918 onboard the Huron. He was listed as serving as a Corp. in Co. H, 153rd Infantry, 39th Division.
