TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT JANUARY 30, 1919 P. 6
December 23, 1918.
Dear Father:
I hope this letter will find you all well. I have not heard from any of you yet.
My company is well into Germany now. We have been hiking for over a month. I have seen lots of country, for on our hikes we came through Belgium and Luxemburg. We saw some pretty country.
I would like to be home to spend Christmas with you. I suppose you have heard from Carroll. I think perhaps I can come home by spring.
I guess there was joy a-plenty when the armistice was signed. For my part, I will be glad when I get back, for I am thankful to be alive.
I would like to be home for the big Christmas dinner, though I don’t know what keeps me from hearing from you. I have written home every few days. You may look for me when you see me coming---I hope that will be real soon.
Your son,
Abner Q Smith.
NOTES: Abner Quincy Smith was born in Martinville, Arkansas on August 24, 1890 and died on November 2, 1966. He is buried in the Spires Cemetery in Damascus, Arkansas. Smith was serving with the Army of Occupation in Germany. He is writing to his parents Judge and Mrs. E. L. Smith. The Carroll mention in the letter is his brother.
