TRANSCRIBED FROM THE CARLISLE INDEPENDENT SEPTEMBER 19, 1918 P. 6

Dear home folks
I will try and write you a few lines today as I am feeling fine, and I hope you are as well.
Well we are some where on the Atlantic ocean and talk about sea sick. “My Lord!” we all thought we were going to die, but we think we will make it now, Ha! Ha!
Well how are the crops and also everybody.
Most of us think we will be home by Christmas, and I really believe we will from the way everything looks now.
The sea is quiet today but believe me, it sure has been rough. I think I have seen most kinds of fish already. I saw some I bet would weigh a ton. I have often heard of cold days in August but this is my first to see. We have to wear our overcoats when we are out on deck.
Mama tell dad to keep my Woodman dues paid up for me.
I wrote you a card like aunt Nannie got from Sam you know, and an writing this so I can mail it to you as soon as we land.
Well I’ll close for this time, so answer soon as you get this for I am anxious to hear from home, As ever, your dear loving son.
Emmett Smith.
