TRANSCRIBED FROM THE SCOTT COUNTY ADVANCE REPORTER JUNE 6, 1918 P. 3
May 29 -18
Mr. J.B. Co___
Dear Editor:
I will write a few lines to the dear old Advance Reporter for the first time. I see lots of the neighbor boys are coming to Camp this week and lots of the boys are leaving for our sea duty. I hate to see the boys have to go but it looks like something has got to be done.
Well, I will tell you a little about the hospital I got to Camp Pike on the 27th of April and came to the hospital on the 29th. We lie around all day and go to the mess hall three times a day. There are just a few meals eaten at the base hospital. Each day there are 71 hundred meals eat ever day at the base hospital. There are more sick lame and lazy than I ever saw at home. This morning I saw Sine House and alot of other recruits from home, they looked pretty blue but I guess they’ll soon be alright.
Thos J Speaks, Base Hospital
Ward 37, Camp Pike Ark
NOTES: Speaks was born on December 2, 1892 and died on January 24, 1972. He is buried in the Woodville, Cemetery in Woodville California. His military headstone identifies him as an Arkansas Pvt. in the US Army during WWI.
