Dear Father:
I received your letter and was glad to hear from you. Well, pa, this leaves me well and doing fine and in hope of being home soon. It may be two or three months, but if I get home by July 4th, I will be thankful. Two months ago I didn’t know what moment a hun was going to bump me off, but I beat the hun guessing. He thought he would get me but he had bad luck. I will tell you lots of funny things when I get home. There is one thing I can say, I am in Germany now, after a long hike from France, but I hope the next move we make will be to the U. S. A. You say there have been a great many deaths around there, but you didn’t [sic] say who. Hope it was no one that I knew. Well I will close hoping to hear from you soon.
Your son,
Eck Spence.
NOTES: Spence was writing to his father, J. Spence. For a period of time the family thought that Eck had been killed in action. He was born in Arkansas on June 13, 1893 and died on August 9, 1975. He is buried in the Memphis National Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.
