TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT FEBRUARY 6, 1919 P. 2
It has been raining every day and has snowed some.
I met up with a boy from Conway. His name is Courtney, and he is a brother of John Courtney. We have just returned from a two weeks' hike which took us through Lemburg. We are now in Germany. The people treat us nicely.
I didn't have much Christmas. Got three packages of cigarettes and two bars of chocolate.
I have seen lots of country, and lots of the country that was fought over. It surely is a sight to see how badly it is torn up. We didn't get much to eat during Christmas. We do not get much to eat now, and is poor eating at that. I surely will be glad when I get back home, where I can get something to eat.
We were on the water 14 days coming over. I saw one boy that said they made the trip over in four days. We are supposed to sail for home on January 17.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Emmett Lee Springer to his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Springer of Conway, Arkansas. He was serving in the Army of Occupation in Germany. He was born on January 10, 1896 in Cato, Arkansas and died on July 31, 1881 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is buried in the Mayflower, Cemetery in Mayflower, Arkansas.
