On Board U. S. S. “Zeelandia.”
My Dear Mother:
It’s a good thing I got that little 5-day pass and came to see you all, because I don’t guess I’ll get to see you now for some time, as we are on our way “over there.” Ought to reach our port (wherever it is) in the next four or five days. I’m glad I chose the army as my service to the government, because I can’t fancy the sea for mine, but Tom Soxton and I are the only two of the band that haven’t gotten sea sick. Ha! ha! the rest just “heave Jonah.” The old Atlantic didn’t get rough until the 5th day out and then she raved, the waves just came tearing over all of us and we all ran for the hole. I’m feeling fine and dandy. The thought of a submarine don’t worry me a bit and I sleep fine. Have been hungry a lot though, we only get two meals a day. Give my regards to all. Mama I’m just going over here on business and when its over, I’ll be right back to the states. Save “us” that front room on the right up-stairs.
Your Pewee boy.
P. S. We have two pays coming, which I hope will be in American money. He was writing to his mother Zou Ella Stallings.
NOTES: This letter was written by Walter Alonzo Stallings.
