TRANSCRIBED FROM THE CLAY COUNTY COURIER DECEMBER 21, 1917 P. 7
In regard to the Y. M. C. A. must state that in my opinion it is one of the best things that was ever started for the soldier. In fact, C. L., you can’t begin to realize what they do for us unless you were here to see. They furnish us with all kinds of books, magazines, music, picture shows, writing material, and in fact most anything a fellow could expect, free. As for myself, I hardly realized that it could be as it is.
Only this afternoon I had the pleasure of hearing the president of the local Y. M. C. A. at Little Rock speak. He made the statement that on November 10th they expect to start a rally and raise $35,000,000 for the Y. M. C. A. work only.
While I have, as yet, not given anything to this work, I will honestly say that I do think it one of the best things that ever was toward the pleasure and up building of the soldier boy. In fact, this is the only way we have to pass the time away, and you can imagine how ‘old’ it would be for a fellow to stay around the barracks all the time.”
The Young Men’s Christian Association is worthy of your support. Does it get it?
Our boys are giving their lives.
What are you giving?
NOTES: This letter was written by Edgar Stephens of Corning, Arkansas. He was serving in the 145th Infantry Band at Camp Pike, Arkansas. He was writing to C. L. Daniel.
