Dear Editor:
We were stopped here, near Birmingham and I just feel like writing to you all at home. You should be proud of old Cleveland county, it is far ahead of the country we are passing through. These hills are torn up by coal mines, and what land that is tillable is not as good as that back there.
There are only four of us Cleveland county boys who are leaving now. They are Jessie Pierson, Red McCauley, James Young and myself, we feel proud our company which is the 21st we remain by that number until the war is over so now if you read about the 21st Automatic roops getting the kaiser’s goat, you may know who participated in the same.
We have our 90-pound pack, also our new 1917 model Remington rifles which is a soldier’s best friend.
You people back home I know are proud of your fighting men, we feel proud of you, if you are 100 per cent American standing by and doing your bit.
We hope to soon be with you and rejoice at the capture of “Bill” the Lady slaver.
Yours most respectfully.
Prt. James S. Thomas,
31st Co. Oct. Automatic Troops.
