TRANSCRIBED FROM THE SCOTT COUNTY ADVANCE REPORTER SEPTEMBER 27, 1917 P. 4
Charleston, S.C.
Sept. 17, 1917
Mr. Jim Center,
Waldron, Ark.
Sir:
Being a reader of the Advance Reporter for some time; I miss it very much since I have enlisted in the Navy, as that was the 13th of July. I have never got to see a copy since as I don’t stay at one place long enough to subscribe for the paper, or long enough to hear form that part of the country. I hope that everything there is flourishing and that the crops are good. When I left there I went to Little Rock, Ark., where I was sworn in, and then transported to Goodland, Mo., where my parents live and held there 28 days in reserve, and then called back to Little Rock; and from there I was tronsported to Norfolk, Va., and there I went through a course of military training, and then I was transported to Charleston, S. C. where I am at this writing waiting to be assigned to a vessel.
Mr. Jack Rose, the son of a very prominent business man of Fourche Valley was with the crew that was sent to Norfolk from Little Rock, but he and another member of the crew went a little too far up the street at Memphis, Tenn, and missed the train and got to Norfolk 24 hours late and were put in a different company from the rest of us Arkansas boys and I have not heard of him since I left there. The rest of the boys are here, that is, I mean that the rest of the boys that came from Little Rock at that time.
I am getting as fat as a hog since I come here, and sleeping and eating I am getting to be an expert. If that will win the victory, I think that I can do my share. Well, as I am in good health and enjoying myself
I will make the request that you will publish this letter as I have quite a few relations in that part that reads the Advance Reporter that probably would like to hear from me, and it would be too much trouble to write to each one personally. Well, I will close for this time. With best regards to all the readers of the Advance Reporter.
