TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT SEPTEMBER 19, 1918 P. 6
You who have never crossed the ocean don’t know how to appreciate land. I was sure glad to put feet on it again. I never will forget the way the shore looked, it was real pretty. We had a fine trip, though. Most of the way the water was calm. I never got sick at all, but I was more fortunate in that respect than most of the fellows:
Yesterday we walked all afternoon. It is real interesting to see such little farms. They are just little truck patches by the side of the farms at home. The peasants live in little stone huts that look real old. Of course, once in a while you see a larger building. I am anxious to see one of the old French castles. They have so much to do with French history that they will be very interesting.
I surely am glad that I studied the French language while in school for it helps me to understand it. Maybe I can speak fluently before long. I can read it easily.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Private Lowell C. Thompson to his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Thompson of Conway, Arkansas. He is serving in the Quartermaster Reserve Corps. A partial letter written by his brother Byron is also posted on this site.
