TRANSCRIBED FROM THE STAR PROGRESS AUGUST 9, 1918 P. 4
France is a beautiful country; nature’s wonders are grand. A bunch of us boys spent the 4th in one of the little French villages and we had a great time talking to the French girls which we all enjoyed. Had a family dinner, twelve American boys and twelve French girls. If some of the the could have seen and enjoyed our eats and fun every boy in Carroll county would want to be in France. In nearly every case where you see a French flag you will see the stars and strips beside it; in many cases you will see all the allied flags combined in one. But must say the American soldier sure takes the day in France and we are going to take the Germans too. Watch us. Tell folks not to worry, for we are having a good time.
Yours for Allied success,
Coy A. Thurman.
