TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ATKINS CHRONICLE FEBRUARY 8, 1918 P. 1
Dear Papa:
Went to San Antonia yesterday. We took a four hour hike yesterday morning and the Capt. Insisted we rest until 7:30 tonight (Sunday). Advised us to go to San Antonia and absolutely rest. At noon there were 207 cars here to take the bunch to town. The smallest car was a seven passenger Buick and then up to a Packard Junior Six. The cars arrive, park and leave by nomber, so you see we can tell how many cars are here. We are 23 miles from town and make the trip in 40 minutes. Returned last night in 32 minutes. A pike all the way to town. Smooth as the floor. Not a bump or jar. The pike is surrounded on all sides by mountains and a nice spring day. A more pleasant drive could not be imagined. The big cars hire for $2.00 per hour. Fords I expect would be cheaper, but there are no small cars at all.
The city is almost 150,000 people and everything clean as can be. Every home well painted and all the yards and flower gardens are clean and pretty. The flowers are in bloom. Didn’t see a street that wasn’t paved. They believe in public improvements here.
We visited the famous Alamo. Words cannot express the sensations while in the place. It is in the middle of the city and surrounded on all sides by sky scrapers. Makes it look all the more historic.
One prohibition law here is that the whole front of the saloons must be open so anyone passing on the streets can see inside. In this way we could see the famous Elk Horn Saloon and the Silver dollar saloon. In the Elk Horn they have some 1,500 mounted elk and deer heads. Some sight, believe me. The Silver Dollar hss the floors, walls and ceiling covered with silver dollars. Couldn’t find out how many dollars it took, but there is lots of ‘em there. That was my first trip to town since the 12th day of November and you can guess that I enjoyed myself.
Haven’t heard from you yet. Can’t get my mail straight for some reason.
