Camp Stuart, Va., February 2:
We arrived here January 31 on the good ship Martha Washington, after ten days of stormy weather. This is a nice camp, and we get lots to eat and don’t have anything to do. It is just like summer here. The sun shines, and it didn’t do much but rain in France.
I just lacked four days of being four months across the sea. I traveled about 12000 miles and have been in almost every large town in France, traveling mostly on foot with an 80-pound pack on my back. I weigh 180 pounds and am in fine health. God has been good to me and no harm can come to those who trust him. I don’t know when I will get home, as they are going to send me to Camp Shelby, Miss.
Bert Vanscoy.
NOTES: Vanscoy was writing to his mother Mrs. L. A. Vanscoy of near Lowell, Arkansas. He had just recently arrived back in the US from overseas. The letter shows his initials as H. B. Vanscoy.
