The people treat us royally and seem glad to see us. We were marching up a street lined with people, waving flags and shouting. I heard a woman say to her companion, “They are coming, Mary, My God! They are coming!” and the depth of feeling in that voice cannot be described.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Lieutenant James Madison Waddell Jr. from England to his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Waddell Sr. He was born on May 5, 1893 in Monticello, Arkansas and died on May 29, 1963 in Beaufort, South Carolina. He is buried in the Saint Helena Episcopal Cemetery in Beaufort. He attended officer’s training camp at Leon Springs, Texas and served in the Air Services. He was described as being tall and medium build with brown eyes and black hair.
