Hello, Artle:
Arrived today and sure was glad to get back to the States once more. I suppose I will get about 30 days for a day off and then I will come down and see you all. We had a good sea all the way over. Have an idea that I will be here about six months, maybe longer.
When I get home will tell you what I have seen and done in the last two years in the navy. I went on liberty here tonight but it was raining and snowing and cold and I didn’t stay long. In the Azores they had plenty of pineapples, bananas, oranges, etc. and we went swimming in December.
The Mount Vernon is up dry dock here. She got torpedoed about 100 miles out of Brest, France.
AMOS P. WALKER
NOTES: This letter was written by Amos Pierce Walker to his niece Miss Artie Walker of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. He was born on September 17, 1889 in Pea Ridge and died on October 18, 1959 in Pea Ridge.
