TRANSCRIBED FROM THE DEQEEEN BEE JUNE 21, 1918 P. 7
Somewhere in France,
May 3, 1918
Dear Friend Willie:
I have neglected to answer your last letter so long, I suppose you think I never intend to write you and tell you something about France.
Well, this part we are in is something like Sevier county, except the houses. It is not often we see many people here—only soldiers, and they are here by the millions.
The civil population are very industrious. None are idle. Quite a lot of poor people on account of the war, although they have plenty of food and good hopes.
They think quite a lot of us Americans and we are all millionaires over here. Any American soldier is thought to be a millionaire over here. The French soldier only gets three pennies per day. We had quite a time on our sea voyage, did not even see a U-boat.
Germany has almost lost their air power and will lose every thing. Germany will lose the war. She is starving herself. You would not believe the tales about the way they are doing.
It is thought it will all be ending this year.
I received a letter from ____ _____. It only takes four weeks to get a letter from home. I must close for this time. How are ____ ____.
A friend,
Tom Ward
