Editor Independent:
I wish to say for myself and in behalf of the other boys of Company E that we really did not know how badly we regretted leaving the good people of Newport until we got out of sight of the town. When we got ready to leave the station at Newport we were about the jolliest bunch you ever say, but when we got to Little Rock we were the bluest bunch you have ever seen, and our caps and overalls made us look “bluer.” We miss Mr. McDougald’s daily handouts too. We didn’t eat here much for nearly two days.
But we have got over a lot of our homesickness now. We are gradually getting acclimated and there is no moping. We are ready for the fight and have our uniforms.
With love and best wishes for all the good people of Newport and Jackson county, I am,
Yours truly,
ROBERT WEATHERBY.
