TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ASHLEY COUNTY EAGLE NOVEMBER 14, 1918 P. 1
This leaves me well and having a very good time. The only thing, I can’t speak French much. I can ask for anything I want in the Café, but that is all. I don’t get much time to write and it is not like being back in the states where they can carry it so easily. There are so many of us that it takes up a lot of room on the ships, and they don’t allow us to write much, for some reason, but if anything should happen to me you all would know it. So don’t worry about me, for I feel like I will be back in the states in a very short time. I am on the Front now but can’t tell you where. I have been shelled a time or two, but it don’t amount to much.
NOTES: This is a partial letter written by Jesse Wigley, son of Mr. J. Wigley. He is writing to the home folks from France. He was born on October 18, 1895 and died on January 14, 1973. He is buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery in Ashley County, Arkansas. His military headstone identifies him as a Pfc. Co. D. 306 Engineers.
