TRANSCRIBED BY FROM THE GRAVETTE NEWS HERALD APRIL 4, 1918 P. 1
All of the 142nd F A has been ordered home except that First Battalion commanded by Maj. Bradford. The First Battalion is composed of Batteries A, and B, and stationed at Camp Valdahon acting as a school battalion for the entire artillery forces of the American Expeditionary Forces. We were sent here because of our efficiency; and when you stop to think that of all the artillery in the A. E. F. an Arkansas outfit was chosen for the work, I feel you will pardon me for the pride I take in it.
From this it will be seen that all the Gravette boys are listed to come home except Wyric Lewis who is clerk of Battery B. The Russell boys and Don Patterson are of Battery D, but in the signal service, have never been at Valdahon. Raoul Foster, who was at Valdahon with Headquarters Co., returned to the division at Coetquidan, near Brest, and all of the 142nd, except batteries A, and B. also the 141st F. A. are booked for home coming soon.
NOTES: Lieut. Odie Williams wrote this letter from France while serving in the 142nd Field Artillery, 39th Division. His letter was addressed to the Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock, Arkansas.
