Dear Mamma and Papa:
I received your letter this afternoon and was glad to hear from you and to know you were all getting along o. k. This leaves me feeling fine. I like this place better every day, as there are all sorts of amusements such as picture shows, vaudeville and all kinds of army sights. There is hardly a day that we do not have two or three airplanes go up. Well I am not doing much as they haven’t got my shop built yet. Will start shoeing as soon as they get it done, so about all I am doing is sleep, of which I am a very poor hand. Guess I’ll sleep better when I start to work.
Am glad Ted is satisfied at Jonesboro; it is the best thing he ever did, if he will stay with it. They will make him like it if you will keep him in their charge.
Well, it is getting pretty cold early in the mornings, but gets warm after the sun gets up. You were asking when I thought we would go across. It will be two months anyway. Of course all we know is what our captain tells us. We haven’t got any of our sea equipment yet, so that shows we are here for a little while. All our regiment wants to go across, but all want to come home first on a visit. Some of them have gone and have never come back. None of them had permission to go. Some of them are in Mexico and are safe, but I had rather be in the army than in Mexico.
Tell Dora I am glad she is sending me my sweater as I sure need it. How is Mrs. May and Mrs. Nuckolls. I see where Joe is across. Well, my pen is no good and I have given it up.
Say papa, you know Jim Denton at Grubbs? He is Mike’s brother. I met him at San Diego in a dance hall. He is in the navy. You see where several of the boys I know are. I got the picture of Dora and also the paper which I enjoyed very much. Well, mamma, I have written about all I can think of so I will close for this time. You adrdessed my letter wrong. Don’t put San Diego on it. I was lucky to get it. With love,
