TRANSCRIBED FROM THE SCOTT COUNTY ADVANCE REPORTER JULY 4, 1918 P. 2
Mr. Jim Audas,
Dear Jim:
Well I am still on my same old pins and navagating very well.
Haven't yet met up with any of those Huns I hear so much about.
We are somewhere back of the lines for a few days off; have been up to the front. Don't see anything so awful bad except mud, rats and cooties, and a fellow gets so he don't mind anything like that.
Have seen a few small scraps also a few gass attacks but I fooled them by yanking my gass mask in time, so I pulled through them all O.K
We have lots of exciting times over here such as swimming, fishing, fist fights and all sorts of stunts. We had an entertainment given by some real American girls; they are awful scarce over here. I think I have seen about six American girls in the last six months.
I would like to see my girl now don't suppose she would know me if I were to come back there now. Anyhow I would give a years pay to see her and the rest of my friends back there.
Well, how is my old job? Who is holding it down? Perhaps I will come back there to work sometime, that place now would seem like heaven to me.
Well Jim, write me as often as you can for I like to hear from my old home town.
From your old pall,
John H. Woods

NOTES: Woods is writing from France.
